A Hoosier closet or Hoosier is a kind of cupboard or free-standing kitchen cupboard that also works as a workstation. It was prominent in the initial few years of the 20th century in the United States, because most residences did not have built-in cooking area cabinetry. The Hoosier Manufacturing Co. of New Castle, Indiana, was one of the earliest and biggest makers of this item, creating the term "Hoosier closet" to come to be a common term for that sort of furniture. By 1920, the Hoosier Production Firm had sold two million cabinets. Hoosier-style closets were also made by loads of various other firms, and many were in Indiana or located close by. Some of the larger producers were Campbell-Smith-Ritchie (Boone); Coppes Brothers and Zook (the Napanee); McDougall Business; and G. I. Sellers and Sons. Hoosier cupboards developed for many years to include even more accessories and developments that made life much easier for chefs in the kitchen area. They came to a head in appeal in the 1920s, after that declined as homes began to be constructed with integrated kitchen area cupboards and counter tops. The Hoosier Manufacturing Company was sold in 1942 and sold off. Today, Hoosier closets are valued by antique collectors.
